Ravello: A Piece of Italy in Singapore

Continuing my food hopping exploration of delicious food in Singapore, I was introduced to this quaint little restaurant nestled in Serangoon. This area is a treasure trove of delightful yummies.

I was immediately impressed with Ravello because the server was very knowledgeable about the menu, and the plates and bread were both still warm. This attention to detail is not something that most places take note of, so it's a pleasant surprise. The warm crusty bread dipped in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar mixture was very comforting and heartwarming, definitely a great start to a wonderful meal.

Fritto Napoli ($19)
Neapolitan style, deep fried mix of prawns,
calamari and white bite salt and pepper

We ordered an appetizer to try, and this dish blew us away.
We tried a similar one at La Nonna but this one just sealed the deal. If I thought that was pretty good, this one is more awesome. They also served it up with an Arrabbiata sauce but this one tasted more  like house-made sauce instead of something that came out of the bottle. There was garlic, herbs, tomatoes, spices and it made me want to mop it all up with the springy calamari. The prawn was huge and it was fresh and flavourful. There's a very nice bite to the calamari and prawns, the batter wasn't too overwhelming so it was suitably crispy while retaining the seafood's original sweetness and moisture.
What really blew me away was the fact this costed the same price as the calamari dish from La Nonna, and I think this one is much more value for money.

Linguine alle Vongole Veraci ($19)
Linguine tossed in white wine, parsley,
garlic EVOO and fresh Clams

I love a good Vongole pasta so this is one dish I will always try if they have it on the menu.
I like that the clams are small but meaty, and they have a generous portion of them scattered in the plate. The linguine was cooked al dente which provided a nice chewy bite to it. The white wine sauce was thick and very rich. It was such a pleasure to slurp up the linguine with the fragrant sauce.

Tonnarelli Ingarbugliati ($24)
Black ink squid spaghetti with seafood
in tomato sauce

I am usually not a fan of tomato-based pasta dishes, but I think this dish might have changed my mind. It had that distinctly sweetness of tomatoes, but it's also infused with the sweetness of the seafood so there's a balance. This is also slightly spicy, kinda like the Arrabbiata sauce in the calamari dish earlier. The squid ink pasta was also cooked al dente and very chewy. My only gripe was that it's normal spaghetti and not other types of pasta like rigatoni or manicotti. Maybe can request...

Pappardelle allo Stracotto di Capretto ($25)
9 hours slow-braised Goat Meat sauce with flat pasta

This dish is a fragrant fragrant one that captured my heart the moment it was served.
The pappardelle has been soaked in this lovely, salty broth that is both meaty, cheesy and extremely flavourful. It is certainly easy to slurp all of this up when it tastes so delicious. There is also a very homely flavour to this dish, like something your grandmother will cook for you on a cold winter day while she sits across you and watches you dig in. This dish, might just be my favourite item out of all that I've tried.

Auntie Kim's Korean Restaurant

It was a rainy rainy day and definitely a good idea to have some piping hot Korean food to warm your heart and your hungry tummy!

Auntie Kim's is located in a corner of Upper Thomson road and I've wantd to try it for the longest time ever. The name inspires thoughts of hot and comforting Korean food served up in a setting that can only be seen in your Kdramas.

At Auntie Kim's, they offer a large variety of banchan, and they're all pretty tasty. A good preview to the main dish! My favourite is the beansprouts and small kimchi! You can also ask for refills if you run out, and they gave us some pretty interesting ones such as preserved ginger which was super delicious. Kinda cleans the palate and gets ready your tastebuds for the next dish.

Samgyetang 삼계탕
Ginseng Chicken Soup $25

The samgyetang soup was really light and sweet, with a hint of herbal goodness.
It was raining outside and this soup really warmed us up.

There was glutinous rice stuffec inside the chicken so you'll find that you're slurping up some rice as well while drinking the soup. I found the chicken a little on the dry side, but the soup was clear and light with this mild hearbal sweetness. Something interesting to try, since I usually prefer a spicy kimchi and tofu pot, extra warmth for the tummy!

Haemuljeon
Seafood Pancake $18

This was a mehhhh, there was a lot more flour than ingredients.
So far I think the best I've tried is still the version at Yoogane. That one was really awesome. Generous fillings without all that chunky batter and pan fried to a crisp.

Doiji-Bulgog
Pork Bulgogi $15

This is one dish that you can definitely order to satisfy your bulgogi craving.
The slices of meat were cut to the right size so you can gobble up a huge spoonful of it, and sauce was thick and a little spicy. It was flavourful and had some of that homecooked feel to it.
This is definitely a heartwarming dish.

Verdict: 4/5

The environment is lovely, especially if you go early, the place is almost empty and you can enjoy your dinner in peace before the dinner crowd comes in. The food is really good and it really settles that craving you get for Korean food after you binge watch Kdramas.

Platypus Lobster Shack: East-Coast Style Lobster Rolls

Wayyyy before the lobster roll craze began, it turns out I've already tried them at Boston Seafood Shack. Now that the lobster roll craze is in full swing, I decided to try out some of the more pocket-friendly versions at Platypus Lobster Shack. The Platypus group has a couple of restaurants, one of which is the Platypus Kitchen situated in Bugis Junction. It has started to serve up some of the lobster rolls as well. So if you can't get a reservation at the Lobster Shack, maybe you can try your luck at the Platypus Kitchen. Though I should warn you first, they don't have all the flavours available.

CRUSTACEAN BOWL (19 / 26)
Uni creme, butter-poached lobster, Japonica rice, honey ponzu, caviar, char-grilled cheddar cheese, sesame, chervil - Limited to 12 bowls each day -

This started out as an appetitzer dish, but it was so popular that the people at Platypus decided to create an option to order this as the main.

This is one bowl of umami goodness, the succulent lobster flesh paired with the creamy goodness of torched cheese melting in your mouth is just... pure heaven.
I could gobble up the whole bowl by myself, the rice had already soaked in the flavours and it was a beautiful blend of flavours and textures exploding in your mouth. This is something I will order again next time I return. Too much goodness in a bowl.

The lobster rolls are all priced at an affordable $19.90 if you only want the roll, and $22.90 for a set of chips and salad.

The first picture was taken at Lobster Shack and the second was at Platypus Kitchen.
The butter poached lobster meat was fresh and succulent, and I like how the bun is lightly toasted so it's warm and crisp. Truffle chips and fries were so-so, but the salad had a burst of tangy zest to wake up your tastebuds and give your tongue a little break from the food.

Without the mayo, you can really taste the lobster, unfortunately my lobster all came in tiny little pieces and I couldn't really taste the fresh bite of the lobster meat. Looks like The Traditional had more chunky pieces of lobster meat!

This also looked fabulous and the burnt cheddar added another layer of texture and flavour to it.

Verdict: 4/5

This is a place I will definitely return to if I have a craving for lobster rolls.

La Pizziola: Cosy Italian Dining in a Quiet Neighbourhood

We're on a hunt for pizza pizza pizza, because pizza just makes you happy.
So deviating from the usual pizza places, we found one that's a little off the grid, and we were blown away when we entered the restaurant.

They have natural lighting!
There is a little small sort of alcove at the back with huge sky windows that lets in lots of natural light. It was the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen in a restaurant.

The chef came by the rattle off a list of specials that are not on the menu so why not?

Off the menu Special of the day: Mushroom soup

This is one amazing mushroom soup.
It doesn't have all that "add a lot of cream" nonsense where a lot of places do, to cheat you into thinking their mushroom soup is creamier and more luscious than it actually is.
This soup, is pure mushrooms.
You can taste the freshness of the shrooms and savour the fragrance of it slowly spreading in your mouth. It was really really good, not quite like anything I've ever had before.

La Pizzaiola Speciale Pizza
Mozzarella, roast beef, parmesan, Italian rockets, truffle oil

Moving on to the pizza, we ordered one of their specials to try.
It was interesting. The base was a cross between chewy and biscuity. It started off as pretty crunchy but after you've left it for awhile, it gets a little more chewy. Flavour wise was pretty good, there were generous slices of roast beef. While it wasn't a wow moment, it's fairly decent. In fact, if you were a pizza connoisseur, I think you'll appreciate the pizzas here. There wasn't a lot of fanfare, but you can clearly taste the very atas ingredients that they use to make the pizza, and the standard is really quite decent.

My only gripe is that the pizza was very hard to slice/tear apart, makes eating it a little inconvenient, especially when the dining environment is really quite classy. They also didn't slice the pizza evenly, so some pieces were really wide, and some were rather narrow, makes splitting the food with your dining companion a little tricky.

Squid Ink Tagliatelle con Granchio
Squid-ink flat ribbon pasta with crab meat and white wine sauce
No visit to an Italian restaurant is complete without trying their pasta dishes too.
This one was really quite spectacular. I thought it would be interesting to try squid ink pasta, and this dish provided a very seafoody element and taste to it that is quite unforgettable. Slurp it up with the white wine sauce, and you'll keep going back for another mouthful.

Verdict: 4/5

While I wasn't wildly excited about their pizza, I really love the ambience of this place.
So if you're looking for a fairly atas and classy place for a satisfying Italian meal, this is the one.
I recommend going in the afternoon though, then you can get a look at that gorgeous natural lighting and enjoy a quiet lunch without too many patrons talking and bustling around.

Insta-Nov

I am awaiting eagerly for my holidays!

Before the good times begin, the bad times have already come knocking. This is when good quality potato chips help to dispel some of that sian-ness.

Black black black!
This was a tad too thick for me, it was really fragrant and nice but towards the end it felt a little too much so I gave up. But it was still good!
Ikkousha is my next trusty go-to place for ramen, after Ippudo.

Went to Gindaco for yakisoba, only to find out they've taken that off the menu.
WHATTTT?!
How depressing, so we ventured upstairs for Watami soba instead.
And royal pudding afterwards.
Yeah nothing is enough to sooth the loss of my trusty yakisoba place.

November was such a hectic month and to end the month, I attended a themed dinner as a baseball player. All I could think about was snuggling up in bed with my ducks and some Castle.

Last exciting thing I did before November is gone, visited SAM and had fun with some interactive art installation. How does my HDB look, complete with ducks and runaway dustbins and burning bins.

December is upon us and my long-awaited holidays are finally here!
Bye November!
