Travel Thailand: Ban Khun May

Wandered around a little, but it didn't take me too much effort to find the place.
Also because I'm a smartie pants who included the Thai written version of the restaurant's name in my itinerary, so if I had trouble, I can ask the locals directly by showing them the picture. No need to crack my brains to pronounce it properly. Genius.

I love the interior. Very rustic and Thai village-y.
Good thing we were early, the queue started soon after our food arrived.

Tom Yum Goong
This soup is fiery red, but don't be fooled by it's appearance. It's not as spicy as it looks.
Having said that, you still shouldn't let your guard down and gulp it down like pepsi. This is afterall, tom yum soup! I really enjoy this soup because it has kick .It's a balance of sour and spicy, tickling your taste buds and whetting your appetite. Not to mention, there were generous portions of ingredients inside the soup. This is undoubtedly, one of the best Tom Yum Goong I have ever tasted.

Pad Thai
Some people like their pad thai dry, while some prefer it wet. I belong to the latter, and I like my Pad Thai to be slightly wet. The Pad Thai here is amazing. Yes, it's slightly wet, the moisture helped retained the sweetness of the dish. Bring on the lime, the zesty vibe brings the fragrance of the dish to a whole new level.
I love the fragrance and texture of the kuay teow, which were very thin and translucent. There were generous portions of ingredients in the dish, and they were all very fresh.

Shrimp Cakes
We wanted to order the Pandan Chicken, which looked really appetizing, but sadly it's out of stock. This is an excuse to visit Bangkok again so I can savor the Pandan Chicken!!

We settled on the succulent looking Shrimp Cakes instead, and boy were we glad we made this choice. The Shrimp Cakes didn't disappoint at all. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, you can actually see and taste the prawns inside. The Shrimp Cakes were juicy, fresh and succulent. You can taste the sweetness of prawns within and it just reels you in. Enjoy it with a dab of the Thai sweet spicy sauce, and it's perfect.

Verdict: 5/5

The single, most expensive meal of my entire Bangkok trip. The entire meal costed around 500THB, which is actually still dirt cheap if you converted it SGD. But yeah, mostly I ate at street side stalls and food courts so this is considerably more expensive.

But I have to say, this is worth every dollar of my hard earned money.
I will definitely be back.

Travel Thailand: Eating in Terminal 21

Pier 21 is this foodcourt located on the upper levels of this shopping mall called Terminal 21.
It's a relatively new place, but the food court boasts an exciting variety of authentic Thai cuisine.
It's a good place to go if you're a beginner in Thai food, because you can watch, compare and decide which dish interest you. An alternative is to go with a large group, so you can each order something different and share among yourselves. This is a good way to sample a variety of Thai food at an affordable price.

In Thailand, most of the foodcourts use a card or coupon system to ensure hygiene is maintained.
So make sure you take a turn around the foodcourt to see what you would like to eat, take note of the price then go to the counter to top up your card. You don't have to buy the card. After your meal, you can simply take it back to the counter for refund (if you have balance leftover), and they will take the card back.

Prawn and Egg Stir-fry

I like this. The egg was slightly runny and the basil leaves left an amazing fragrance.
The downside is the prawns inside the egg were tiny, and they still had their shells on. Makes it kinda tricky to eat because you still have to dirty you hands to de-shell the prawns. Maybe I should start calling them shrimps. They were really smallllll. Not satisfying at all.

So yes, the flavour of the dish was great but it could have been better if the prawns were bigger and de-shelled.

Tom Yum Goong

This bowl of soup is so..empty. Two or three eeny weeny tiny prawns and.. no more.
Seriously lacking in substantial ingredients.
But the soup is not bad. Not the best I've tasted but still pretty decent.
It has kick and it managed to hit all the right spots.
I don't have issues with it, except for the serious lack of ingredients.

Verdict: 4/5

Satisfying, but not fantastic.
But I must mention that the wide variety offered at Pier 21 is really amazing.
I saw Green Curry Fried Rice and many other enticing dishes. So if you happen to be hanging around Terminal 21, I would recommend you to pop by the foodcourt for some bites. It doesn't hurt that the foodcourt looks very San Franciso-ish, and squeaky clean.

Travel Thailand: Chatuchak Weekend Market

Our very simple lunch at the weekend market!
I'm afraid I can't provide the exact location of the stall, because it's just another streetside stall inside Chatuchak.

But my advice is to go early, so you can have ample time to walk around the market. Then if you spot any stall that attracts you, JUST GO FOR IT.
Don't wait til your tummy is growling, because by then everyone is also hungry.
The portions are small, so you can always try something else again when you want to take a break from your shopping.

Fish Ball Bee Hoon

Thailand fishballs are so good! So bouncy and meaty and fresh. The beehoon is also really tasty!

Pork Ball Kuay Teow

I can probably eat two bowls of these by myself.
Yes appetite level up. And okay their food portions are tiny.
I love the light flavour of this dish, you can add chilli powder or whatever you like into your bowl. They have a condiments rack on every table.

Thailand kuay teow is far superior to the ones we have in Singapore. They tasted great in soup, in stir-fry and are even great by themselves. There is a hint of rice fragrance in their kuay teow that is severely lacking in Singapore.

The pork balls were very different from the pork balls I know. In fact, these tasted a teeny bit like fish cakes. But I like it alot too. The soup is very light and sweet, and the beansprouts provided a refreshing crunch.

Lunch was too little to satisfy my stomach, so we needed dessert!
Lo and behold...

Err yes, you didn't see wrongly.
It's banana.

Colourful banana!!

Colourful and FROZEN banana!

These were frozen bananas, coated in chocolate, dipped in rainbow rice, then stuck in some machine again to freeze the chocolate in 3 seconds.

I nearly died eating this, my sensitive teeth were screaming with every bite I attempted to take.
But it was pretty cool. Quite a novelty actually.

I prefer smaller bananas. If the banana were smaller, I think it would have been better.

Verdict: 5/5

Chatuchak is an awesome place for shopping, but don't overlook the food offered here.
Simple fare, but sometimes it the simplest things that catches your heart.

Travel: Thailand Eat All You Can

SIAM PARAGON FOOD STREET

Thai Sausages

I have never tasted anything like this before. It has the appearance of German sausages, but it tasted like Thai herbs and spices. So so delicious. The sausages were spicy, appetizing and had the fragrance of Thai herbs. They were juicy and you can enjoy them with lettuce to balance out the heat from the spices.

When I saw this, I knew I had to get it.
I am not a fan of doughnuts, but I have heard too much about Krispy Kreme to pass it up.
The Original Glazed will do nicely.
The dough was soft and fluffy, and the glaze wasn't too sweet.
Perfection. I have finally found it in Krispy Kreme.

Verdict: 5/5

Siam Paragon is a fairly high class shopping center, with huge foreign brands. But don't be fooled, their basement food street is actually very exciting. All sorts of Thai snacks and western cakes, cafes and ice creams. Their supermarket is really huge and interesting too. So if you're in the vicinity, do drop by to visit their food street. The sausages were really tasty.

MBK FOOD COURT

I don't eat sticky rice, but that doesn't stop me from ordering this because...I can still eat the mangoes.
Thailand mangoes are the best. Ultra sweet and ultra juicy.
Need I say more?

Verdict: 5/5

MBK should be a familiar name with all those who visit Bangkok often, and of course no stranger to the MBK food court on Level 6. The Claypot Beef Kuay Teow there is to-die-for and I've heard the other dishes are really good. There's a huge variety of Thai food there, and if you venture outside the foodcourt, you can find cheap Bangkok Bird's Nest on the same level.

Eat to your heart's content.

Street Food

This is a very obscure stall, hidden in an alleyway, right in front of my hotel.
I love it.

The first day I arrived, I smelled the fragrance coming from the chicken. They were peng-kanging satay!
I told myself I will try it the next day.
But they weren't open! Darn.

But good thing was, they were open on weekdays.
After a day of intensive shopping at Platinum, we had no more energy to go anywhere.
All energy were used for shopping, and now I have none left for dinner. Tsk.

Thankfully, they were open for business!
We went upstairs to relieve ourselves of the baggages, then went downstairs to buy chicken satay.
We bought 2 sticks of wings, 2 sticks of drumsticks, 1 stick of breast, and 2 sticks of some marrow thingy.
Now it's off to the room for our own mini party!

I was starving, I believed I ate 3/4 chicken that night.
HAHA, yeah amazing I know. I'm usually a 1/4 chicken person. But I devoured everything in my sight.
There was a sweet spicy chilli dipping that came with the chicken, and it was sooooo good.
It's kinda tangy, so you won't feel too heavy eating all the meat. The spiciness also wakes you up.

Awesome stuff.
The next time I visit Bangkok, I'm definitely patronizing this stall again.

I just realized I rank all 3 as foodie heavens, oh well.. you'll be hard-pressed to find horrible food in Thailand anyway. Except maybe Platinum, as featured in the previous post. Not very pleasing lol.
More food posts coming up featuring Chatuchak Market and Ban Khun May!
Stay tuned.

Travel Thailand: Eating in Platinum Mall

Tadahhh~~~ hot off the literary stove!
Slowly but surely, I'm putting together entries from my Bangkok trip in December!

Okay let's go~

Claypot Beef Kuay Teow

I really love Thailand's version of Claypot Beef Kuey Teow, but this one is really wayyyyyyy tooooo saltyyy!
The soup base is really tasty, kuay teow so smooth, and everything else is perfect, but hey Mr Chef, the soup is TOO SALTY! You can taste the sweetness of beef in the soup but most of it has been overpowered by the overwhelming saltiness.

I know MBK has better Claypot Beef Kuey Teow, but err.. I was way too full from Ban Khun May to be able to fully appreciate it. Next time!! (More on Ban Khun May in another entry soon!)

Classic Papaya Salad

This papaya salad is slightly less watery than the one at Asiatique, and it's also more to my taste.
Crunchy papaya, sweet spicy and sour tickling your taste buds all at once and whetting your appetite.

Mixed Fishball/Fishcake Bee Hoon Soup

This is like the equivalent of yong tau foo + fishball soup + fish soup in Singapore.
They have a little of everything inside, with beehoon and very sweet clear broth.

Stewed Pork Leg & Deep Fried Pork with Rice

I've read alot in reviews that I should try this when in Bangkok, but.. this just didn't hit the spot.
Yes the stewed meat were very tender, but somehow there is no fragrance. You know when your mum cooks braised pork, the succulent piece of pork itself has this irresistible fragrance of soy sauce? Yeah, this one lacks the fragrance. And somehow, I just find the dish very plain and boring.
I don't like this.

Verdict: 3/5

Platinum Mall is an awesome place for wholesale shopping, but they really don't have fantastic food.
Mediocre at best, and sometimes a little disappointing.

CNY Nails

Oh behold my Lunar New Year nails!

Done with 2 coats of OPI Malaga Wine and silver glitter polish from The Faceshop.

The silver polish was sponged on, simply dab some silver on a sponge, then lightly dab near the tip of your nails. It'll go over slightly, so it's important to only dab on the tips. This is so you can leave some allowance for the surplus polish to cover up til half of your nail. If you dab directly on top of the entire nail, then you'll end up with just red polish layered with silver. But with this technique, you get a gradual colour change.

Looks quite pro right! haha! Self-praise, but I'm loving this.
Easy and classy. Probably next time I'll switch it up with another base colour, or even a gold glitter!

Flickr App Event

There are plenty of photo sharing applications in the market nowadays, and most people would be familiar with the most popular one - Instagram. Now, Instagram is an awesome app, but let me introduce another awesome app to you.

The iPhone Flickr App.

Here are some of the features of this application.

Features of Flickr App:

The first thing I check on ALL social media platforms is the function to moderate your viewers.
The Flickr app has the moderation functions too, so you can decide who joins your groups.
For example, you just want to create a group for all your family photos BUT you don't want it to be public.
This function will definitely serve your needs perfectly.

Flickr app comes with built in photo-editing functions, and of course the crowd favourite - FILTERS!

Check out this shot of mine, shot on the iPhone 4 and edited using the Flickr app filter.

?

Not too bad, isn't it?

Groups.

One of the most useful function that other photo sharing apps just doesn't have.
Say you have a bunch of photos from you family gathering that you want to share, but you don't want the public to access it. Perfect. Dump the shots into a group, set it to privcate then invite only your family members to join. Only the people who are in the group can view and download the photos.

Picture too small?
No problem.
Just tilt to view the photos in HD quality.

Guess what, you can now tweet DIRECTLY from Flickr app!
The images are embedded and attributed to the photographer.

A social media addict?
You can also share directly to your Tumblr account as well, and decide when you want to publish it.
I'm sure all Tumblr users will be familiar with the "Publish Now/Add to Queue" function.

And if you can't read English, Flickr app is available in CHINESE too haha!
Thoughtful, isn't it?

Not bad right?
I mean, okay the names of the filters aren't in Chinese, but I doubt you need to understand it to be able to use it. Just click and if you like the effect, save and publish it!

In case you need a little more persuasion that the brand new Flickr app is awesome, here's a  little video for you to watch.

Yahoo! Image Search – now with Flickr photos

Using Yahoo! Image Search, you can also now easily find photos from Flickr that are available for re-use or re-posting under Creative Commons terms. (To learn more about Flickr’s Creative Commons rules and attribution policies, please click: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

Here’s how it works:
  1. Go to Yahoo! Image Search either on the web, your tablet or mobile phone. Search for any query.
  2. If you’re looking for a photo you can reuse, make sure you select the “Labeled for Reuse” filter on the left rail to only see the photos that you can reuse.

So if you have an iPhone, get going to download the application now!

Holiday Pet Peeves #1

Have you met people who are going for holidays, and they're so nice they take a order list from others and they end up helping people buy stuff the whole holiday?

I know I have.
I have nothing against people like that. T
hey're too nice but if they're happy being too nice, by all means go ahead.

What I can't stand is when these people assume everyone is as nice as them.

They make unreasonable demands such as "Can you buy this and this back for me? I want to give to my colleagues. Of course I will pay you back! Just want to treat my colleagues to some food from Taiwan."

Excuse me? Why should I help you carry your stuff back so you can "por" your colleagues?
The whole concept of souvenirs buying is when you are physically there and you buy back for people to show appreciation. Who are you to tell me to buy things back for you so you can por your colleagues, especially when you're not the one who's physically traveling.
Oh and do you know, food is heavy? Very heavy?

This is not logical. Not logical at all.
I wish these people will come to their senses and realize that their requests are actually quite unreasonable.

Travel Thailand: Eating in Asiatique

Yay yay yay, the long awaited Thailand entry is here!
As the title suggests, it's a shopping and eating trip so my entries will be split into 2 segments.
Shopping and Eating.
There will be more posts coming up, so do keep a lookout!

First dinner in Thailand, not very satisfactory but okay.

Classic Papaya Salad

This is okay, but not excellent. We wanted to try the other stall with Thai stirfry but it was so crowded.
Too watery for my liking.

Sun-Dried Pork
This is quite special, I've never had this before.
The pork is chewy and sweet, and when dipped in the spicy sauce, boy it really brings out the flavour of the Sun-Dried Pork.

Verdict: 3/5

Maybe I just haven't had the luck to try something more delish here, because I saw many upscale restaurants by the river and they look really promising. If I had been able to try the Thai stir-fry, I would probably have given Asiatique a higher rating, because that stall just looks hottttt.

Bacon Egg Cups

This is still one of my all-time favourite savoury recipe, easy to make and super delicious.

This time round it's less oily, but at the same time, it's also less fragrant. Mehh..
Fragrance comes at the expense of fatsssss.
I trimmed away a teeny bit of fat because I found it a tad too oily.

But hey, I like it less oily, feels less jelat.
This is quite filling, maybe next time I should assemble a complete breakfast plate with bacon egg cups, portobello mushrooms and hashbrown.
Whooo! Complete calories overload.
