Win! The Lone Ranger

From the team that brought you “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”, now comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “THE LONE RANGER”!

I don't care what show this is, or even that Johnny Depp is no longer a "savvy-ing" pirate.
The main point is...

THIS IS A JOHNNY DEPP MOVIE!

One of my all-time favourite Hollywood actors, apart from Leonardo DiCaprio and umm..Ryan Gosling haha. That in itself, is already the biggest incentive to watch a movie.

I often do that. Spot my favourite actor and pester the kareshi to watch it with me.
When questioned what the movie is about, I usually reply with a "I don't know haha!"

Okay I digress, we'll go back to talking about The Lone Ranger.
Yes this time Johnny's back, not as a pirate but as a Native American spirit warrior, Tonto.
HAHAHAHA!

Just the thought of him being a spirit warrior already cracks me up. You can always count of Johnny Depp to take on the various kooky roles and put up a superb performance. I am definitely looking forward to this movie! If you need further convincing, how about we take a sneak peek at the latest movie trailer?

THE LONE RANGER” also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter, and is directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski.

So hold on tight for a thrilling ride infused with adventure and well-timed humour, we're going on a wild wild adventure with Tonto (Johnny Depp) the spirit warrior!

Catch Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” in Singapore cinemas this 4 July 2013! For more updates, like the Official Walt Disney Studios Singapore Facebook Page, follow@disneystudiosSG and subscribe to the Official Disney Studios Singapore YouTube Channel!

Music Matters 2013

Went to catch Flumpool at the J-Rock Matters in Clarke Quay with a few friends some time back.

It was really good, even though I was dead beat, I didn't regret braving the crowd to catch them live.
I think this might change my perception of paying to watch concerts, because it's such a great stress reliever!
Nothing can beat the crazy atmosphere and the awesomely cute lead singer's antics.

We got all hot and sweaty jumping in the crowd, trying not to fall down and boy, it was such an experience.
I haven't felt such reckless joy since.. goodness knows when.
It was pure unadulterated joy, music can heal even the most battered soul.

I really hope I get to do such things again, it was really great to recharge my mind and my soul.

Coco Ichibanya

At Coco, one gets to customize their dinner and tailor it exactly to suit their liking.
From the amount of rice to the spiciness of the curry, you get to choose it the way you like it.
Which is a really interesting concept, because it plays on the human vainpot streak in us.

This is omurice with mushroom and cheese.
I swear my dinner partners all love cheese.
This one wasn't too bad, if given a choice I wouldn't be that adventurous but who am I so say this man.

If you read on, you'll realize the adventurous one is me and I'm the one who made an ill-informed choice.
Ahhh.

One of my dinner partner's Cheese Curry.
I think cheese and curry is a pretty weird marriage, but I tasted the curry.
It was actually pretty decent!

I honestly think that I've ordered the wrong dish.
I was craving for omurice and hayashi rice. Really, it was such an intense craving, I HAD to satisfy it.

Turns out I usually pick the wrong places to satisfy cravings. This dish is just mehhhh.
Maybe it's me, because having tasted Ma Maison's superb Hayashi Rice, this is just complete rubbish in comparison. The fluffy omelette was excellent, and the rice was well-cooked.
But therein lies the problem that this is Hayashi Rice aka Hashed Beef Rice and they did everything superbly EXCEPT perfect their beef. The meat were in huge slices, and the sauce was just..rather off.
In fact, the whole dish reminded me some Cai Fan stall in the hawker center selling stirfried beef slices.

This dish was weird with a capital W.

Verdict: 3/5

I am willing to give Coco another chance, and this time I'll probably try out their signature curry rice instead of being tooooo adventurous. But I wonder if their curry is better than Ginza Bairin's? Hmm..

7 Signs of an Emotional Vampire

Have you ever met an emotional vampire?

I have.
And I can honestly tell you, it sucks.

First, I have to define what is an emotional vampire.

We all know the definition of a vampire.
An immortal being that feeds on the blood of humans for its survival.

So if we were to combine the term "vampire" with "emotion", we can deduce that an emotional vampire preys on your emotions, feeding from your emotions to keep themselves alive.

Still kinda vague?

Here are the telltale signs that you've met an emotional vampire.

1. They dramatize their lives.

Everything is more dramatic and exciting. Or so they make it seem.
They have the uncanny ability of turning everything, every tiny little thing into a problem and they will proceed to flood you with all the nitty gritty details of their very exciting and dramatic life.

2. They want attention ALL the time.

Any day, anytime, anywhere.

24/7.

At their beck and call.

Oh and God forbid if different time zones were factored into the equation.
We're supposed to sacrifice our sleep and give priority to THEIR over-dramatized issues.

Anything lesser than that and they deem you an incompetent and uncaring friend.

Which will then lead to number 3.

3. They compare you with other friends

An E.V will compare you with other friends who are more willing to give them their full attention.

Friends who have lesser commitments or different priorities from you.

It wouldn't occur to an E.V that those friends were studying and I was working, thus I have the responsibility to be fresh and alert the next day for work.

Though I must say, friends we might be, but there are some manners that you must abide by. Such as not calling in the middle of the night, or expecting to be able to call at such timings and have the other party engage in a lively conversation with you.

4. They are self-absorbed.

They're only interested about their own life.
Your life means nothing to them.

Ever had the feeling of someone just waiting for you to finish talking so they can jump right in with THEIR stories?

Yes, an E.V does that.

And they have an auto-filter that sifts out your words if it's unrelated to their problems/stories.

5. They fill your waking moments with
THEIR problems.

To the extent where you end up worrying for them 24/7, even though you're not living their life.

6. They don't want to be helped

Because if their "problems" (or lack thereof) were resolved, then they would have nothing to moan about anymore! *gasps*

Oh God forbid that we should be helpful and try to offer solutions.
Offering a solution is a crime because an E.V absolutely does not want or need solutions. They would prefer to wallow in their self-created misery and problems, so they can have endless troubles to complain about.

7. They don't treat you as a friend

Really.
That much should be obvious.
A friend doesn't ignore your needs and ramble on about their own. Non-stop.

A friend wouldn't compare you with other friends.
A friend would understand you do have a life and commitments other than them.

A friend wouldn't do any of the above to you.

So if you have met someone with the above 7 signs, I would highly suggest you drop them immediately.
This kinda friendship is really not worth it.
In other words, it's toxic.

This is dedicated to all the people out there who have met someone toxic, or is still stuck in a toxic relationship, not knowing how to move on or break free.

It is never easy, but it is not impossible .
As long as you can muster up the courage to let go of something that's hurting you, everything will be fine. Because once you let go, everything else that's more beautiful can become yours.

Taiwan: Top 5 Things to Eat

To compile a TOP 5 list is not easy because I confess that almost everything in Taiwan is super duper tasty.
But after much deliberation, I came up with this hahaah.

NUMBER 1: FRIED CHICKEN

So many people's hot favourite!
This is one of my favourites too!
Best eaten piping hot and shared among a few hungry people, can't beat that feeling man.

NUMBER 2: BEEF NOODLES

Beef noodles are something of a Taiwan specialty too, the herbal soup base and melt-in-your-mouth tender beef pieces are unforgettable.

NUMBER 3: MEE SUA

Mee sua!
Not a fan of mee sua, but I really enjoyed the mee sua in Taiwan!
The broth was thick and flavourful, and the experience of eating this in the middle of the street while drizzling is amazing. I think it makes the whole dish more delicious haha.

Can you imagine, cold wind slapping on your faces and rain drops falling on your head.
There you are, holding a piping hot bowl of mee sua and slurping it.

WARMTH IN YOUR TUMMY! :D

NUMBER 4: LOCAL FRUITS

Fruits, are another must-eat in Taiwan.
ALL THEIR FRUITS ARE SO SWEET AND JUICY.

I especially love the SUGAR APPLE also known as Sweetsop (Shi Jia fruit in Taiwan).
Sugar-apple is high in calories, but at the same time is also an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese, a good source of thiamine and vitamin B6, and provides vitamin B2, B3 B5, B9, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium in fair quantities.

NUMBER 5: BUBBLE TEA

MUST DRINK.

I confess that I'm not a huge fan of milk teas and such. I have never drunk KOI when it came to Singapore, was never in love with the bubble tea trend, and the only time I drank it in Singapore was when R had Share Tea vouchers lol. But I've heard so much about this that I just had to try it. Just try once yaknow.

EXCEPT THAT I TRIED ONCE AND I'M HOOKED.
I really love this.
I like it even better that I can ask for less sugar and NO ICE.
I hate ice. I don't like my drinks to be too cold, and this is just the right temperature.

With that concludes my Top 5 list of Taiwan!

I'll include a reading list for my Taiwan entries here as well.

Travel Taiwan: Cing Jing Farm

Another one with a typo error, ahh screw this. I didn't save the PS version so we'll just have to make do.

The skies were very very blue and beautiful.
So here we are on an adventure - one day tour to Cing Jing and He Huan Shan!

Mountain air was especially refreshing, and the lush greenery despite it being winter, greatly boosted our moods. Hills everywhere, but it was such a pleasure taking in the beauty surrounding us.

Trekked pretty far inside to watch the Horse Stunts Show, but I thought that was a waste of time.
It wasn't what I expected, and it got kinda repetitive after awhile, especially when we're sitting still in winter wear under the hot sun. Left early to explore the rest of the place and take photos before the crowd sets in.

The dustbins are sheep-themed! Super duper adorable!

Mini windmills with moo moo patterns.

Not so mini once I went near to take more photos.

While the family took a break resting their feet, I roamed the area snapping more photos.
Haha I really can't sit still for too long unless I'm engaged in my favourite activities.

Doesn't this resemble the Windows  wallpaper? HAHA!

I really felt like I'm standing at the top of the world!

Saw the most shaggy sheep ever.
It's like a mop haha!

And there they are the baa baa white sheep!
They've spotted my brother, who has had mehh mehh food in his palms.
Look at the greedy little things, so intent on reaching my brother.

After all the running and hopping around, we went for our lunch.

You'll be able to see this place when you drive in, it's round the middle of the mountain.

椒麻鸡

I swear this tasted kinda like KFC chicken. But I quite like the spicy tangy combination, it whets our appetite for more food!

菜圃蛋

Everywhere in Taiwan, every meal has this.
Classic homely dish. Very fluffy egg.

You'll have to pardon me because from this point onwards I have no idea of the names of the dishes.
The waiters didn't announce so we just ate them all up without asking haha!

But I can tell you this is a mushroom dish, extremely well-flavoured and fragrant.
There's ginger amd spring onions, the sauce permeated the fresh mushrooms so that every bite is a juicy blend of saltiness and natural sweetness.

No need to introduce cabbage haha, this is the same as the egg. It's omnipresent in every meal.

Some soup which I enjoyed greatly. The broth is very light and tasty.

Ah hah this vegetable dish is very interesting. It is apparently the flower of the Enoki mushroom.
It turned out to be very sweet and crunchy, and I love the texture and bite.

After lunch we left Cing Jing and moved on to He Huan Shan.

Sunny blue skies one moment, and moody grey clouds the next.
This is the one and only blue sky moment I managed to capture whilst up there.
Pity it didn't snow, it was freezing cold but sadly it wasn't cold enough!

The dark clouds come and go so quick, it's difficult to guess what will the weather will be like in the next moment. This is a shot I managed to get when the wind blew some clouds away.

This very spot in He Huan Shan marks the beginning of the Taroko National Park, which stretches all the way to Hualien.

With that I conclude my Cing Jing - He Huan Shan adventure, and this is the second last entry of my Taiwan series. I think I'll collate all the links in the final entry to aid reading.
Cheers!

The Great Gatsby

The long-awaited film!
Ever since I read the book, I've been waiting for it to go up on the silver screen.
Reading it already makes me so excited because I can see the whole story play out in my mind.
All the lights and glitz and glamour, the tragedy the drama the unpredictability of human life.

My favourite actress has got to be Carey Mulligan.
There is something so A-cast about her when I first read her interview in a magazine years ago.
In that moment when I read the interview, I knew this girl would go on to be something big in Hollywood.

Voila, here she is starring as Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. One of the finest literary works of F. Scott Fittzgerald about life in Long Island in the 1920s.

The other man I went to see was undoubtedly Leonardo Dicaprio, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that Toney Maguire cleaned up really well as Spiderman! His rendition of Nick Carraway was good, I felt that he stayed true to the character portrayed in the book. Needless to say, Leonardo Dicaprio was awesome as usual, every expression every action was clearly calculated to bring out the Jay Gatsby written in the books.

Another thing I love about the movie, is the elaborate set and costumes.

Jay Gatsby's castle was just like I imagined when I read the book, very glamorous very posh and of course it's humongous .

The chemistry between Carey Mulligan and Leonardo Dicaprio was sizzling hot.

And the clothes!!
The clothes that Carey Mulligan dons as Daisy Buchanan was beyond lovely.

They were classy, they were girlish, they were ladylike, they were beyond glamorous.

Every piece featured in the film worn by Carey Mulligan was stunning.
The design sets off her character perfectly, the girlish charm coupled with the classy ladylike look.

There are so many things I love about the movie, but as with all adaptations they missed out on a few points such as Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker being a couple throughout the most part of the novel.
But other than that, it's all pretty good and I loved the whole pace and the melancholic mood.

Very well done indeed for a book adaptation.
Cast was wonderful as well, definitely worth a watch!

Verdict: 4.5/5
