Travel Tokyo: 渋谷餃子 Shibuya Gyoza - The Mount Everest of Gyozas

Are you a fan of gyozas like me?

Three cheers to gyozas!
The ultimate comfort food, pan-fried gyozas dipped in vinegar and doused in spicy chilli oil!

We stumbled upon this gyoza shop one day and decided to be adventurous.

Deep-fried Tofu ( 230 Yen )

I was expecting agedashi tofu but turns out it's just normal fried tofu.
Nothing special, you can give it a miss.
Maybe try their stir-fry dishes, they do look and smell fantastic.

20 pieces Gyoza (880 Yen)

We weren't adventurous enough for the Everest hahahaa! 20 was just nice for us.
This gyoza place categorized the amount of gyozas into 3 different mountains - Normal(20), Mt Fuji (30), Mt Everest (40).
I believe this is the grilled gyozas, since they have 3 types - boiled, grilled, fried.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the grilled and fried but I think whichever you ordered will be delish anyway.

Look at the pretty golden undersides of the gyozas!

They gyozas popped open with a burst of juice, and my favourite way of eating them is to douse them all in chilli oil, spoon some chilli flakes on top, then dip them in vinegar. Yums.
While I believe there are even more delicious gyozas out there, this random place I found still managed to hit all the right spots. 皮薄馅多,多汁爽口!

Fried Rice (430 Yen)

One of the best fried rice I've had in my life, this looks deceptively simple but it had a garlicky fragrance and wok hei that tells of a skillful chef wielding the wok! 粒粒分明!
I can easily pack a plate by myself, this goes extremely well with the chilli!

This is the menu, it comes in English. So considerate and helpful!

Not too hard  a place to find, just look out for the signboard with lots of giant gyozas.

In a Nutshell

Verdict: 3.5/5
Price Point: $$
Thumbs Up: Cheap and delicious gyozas. and that FRIED RICE!
To Improve: No smoking in the shop please?
Will I return: YES!
Why: Comfort food near the hotel! Yes please!

I Am

Visited this cafe with R and J one lazy Sunday because we've heard so much about their rainbow millecrepes! I Am is located on Haji Lane and it's pretty noticeable by the crowd.
I honestly think the location is not so awesome, because the cafe is not air-conditioned and the sun is brutal.
It's fine without aircon but at least provide a decent working fan? We sat near the road and we were baking. The metal chairs weren't helping matters. But ohwell.. let's just move on to the food, maybe the food is so mindblowing I can overlook the metal chairs, baking heat and endless loop of Taylor Swift music.

The legendary Rainbow Millecrepes.
It looks really good.
Sometimes I think food that looks too photogenic aren't really as awesome in taste.
This was...just as I said. Better in pictures than in taste.
The millecrepes itself weren't sweet, so it's very reliant on the chocolate sauce and icing sugar to lend it power. Furthermore, it's just very tough to slice through the layers with just a dessert fork. I'm not entirely sure if the crepes aren't as soft because there are multi layers stacked up together, but I thought they were a little on the dry side The chocolate sauce is pretty thick so you get a little sick of it after a few mouthfuls.
I honestly think sharing this would be a better decision.

It would be an even better decision to share the S'mores Tart.
Why?
If I thought that chocolate sauce above was thick, then this is super ultra thick.
This is a complete chocolate fest.
This is like melted Nutella topped with torched marshmallows.
Right about halfway through, I got pretty sick of it.
The hazelnut chocolate is really smooth, and it goes really well with the marshmallows but you have to share this dessert. HAVE TO. I'm amazed I lasted halfway actually, all that sugar wrecks havoc on my digestive system. Never again, moderation is key and sharing is caring.

Verdict: 3/5

Desserts are mediocre and nothing to rave about.
Give me a bowl of tauhuey any day, I think a simple dessert well done is way more satisfying than a complicated dessert that is only at best mediocre.

Strawberry Shortcake Nails

I did this during the December holidays.
Haven't done my own nails in a long while and I'm a little out of touch.
Pastel pink + glittery red tips and some nail stickers.

Went with a quirky, funky look for the toes, some kind of a magenta colour + turquoise tips and polka dots.
I might be doing something to my nails for CNY, so..we'll see what happens then.
I hardly have the time to paint my nails after I started work so my skills are a little rusty and I haven't had much ideas on the designs either. No energy to try complicated designs too, which is a shame.
Maybe I'll get to it during the holidays (if I'm not being too happy just doing nothing, that is).

BonChon Chicken

I've always walked by this place but this is the first time I'm actually trying it out!
The Korean fried chicken trend has been going on for some time in Singapore but this is the first time I'm actually trying it out for myself. Have heard sooo much about how yummy korean fried chicken is so.. let's find out once and for all if it's worth all the hype.

Kimchi Mandu Soup

This soup is thick. There is no other word for it other than thick.
Not entirely sure if that's the way it's supposed to taste, but it's not too bad I think.
Sour and spicy, very appetitizing. There is also a generous portion of kimchi in the soup, so that's a definitely plus point.

Japchae

I like the flavour of these but I found them a tad too oily for my liking.
You can literally see the oil glistening on your plates.

Scallion Pancakes

These are pretty well done. The pancakes are thin and slightly crispy with a generous portion of scallions.
Pair them with the soy sauce, and I think I can finish these all by myself.

Soy Garlic Wings

Okay so the limelight should be on the Korean fried wings.
The soy garlic flavour is slightly sweet and very crispy. Korean wings are fried twice so that the skin becomes more crispy than your usual fried chicken dish.

Hot Sauce Wings

I think the hot sauce flavour isn't really hot, but I do prefer the soy garlic flavour more.
While the skin is really crispy, I thought the meat for both flavours were oddly lacking in flavour and I found it a little on the dry side as well. The chicken meant wasn't juicy enough and that I think is disappointing.

Verdict: 3/5

I would have thought that chicken as the specialty dish would be more well done, but it was a disappointment. The other Korean dishes were pretty good though. Maybe..for Korean fried chicken, I should pay the famed Kho Kho Nara a visit since that place seemed to have raving reviews.

Shimmery Pink

Went to JB and did gelish manicure for the first time!

Picked a really nice shade of pink with tiny little flecks of gold and a sheer glittery jelly polish that has bigger flecks of silver glitter amidst the scattering of tiny silver glitter. Love it so much! :D

Insta-Jan

January is a month of postcards!
BFF is now officially the biggest contributor to my postcard collection,  having sent 5 in a span of...4 months! I now have to find more space to display them, but this is the kind of happy trouble that I don't mind having!

Budapest is here to say hi and this print is so..romantic hahaha
But I have to say the bridge looks absolutely beautiful all lit up..

Then Prague came along soon after...
Europe postcards are sooooo gorgeous and picturesque.

Paris came next, this has got to be one of my favourite postcards!
BFF knows me best.

The Colosseum arrived next, and even the stamp bears a mini Colosseum!

January also saw me crossing the border with one of my girlfriends to the nearby CitySquare mall for a little mani pedi session. One can never forget to stop for some mango dessert especially when it's the famous Hong Kong dessert king Hui Lau Shan!

More postcards arrived for me, this time it's Ashin!
My very cute friend DIY the CNY theme into the disco ball print hahahaa, I have to say  kudos for effort and A+ for creativity!

I have also succeeded in re-creating my own ramen egg with runny yolk!
Doused in soy sauce instead for a quick breakfast, but whoohoo it feels great man!
