Som Tum Nua: Hippie Restaurant with Addictive Wings

Somtam Nua is hippie, its young and it serves one hell of a chicken wings. Thai chicken wings are not to be trifled with and Somtam Nua has shown you why.

But first let's look at some of the other dishes available.

SOMTAM
WITH DRY SHRIMP, THAI PORK SAUSAGE & CRISPY PORK RIND ( 90 BAHT )

No trip in Thailand is complete without trying Somtam. Its basicslly a green papaya or mango salad. Then you can add in various veggies such as shredded carrot, long beans, bean curd and then doused in dry shrimp n chilli dressing. In this case we also have crispy pork rind which is extremely addictive and Thai sausage as well.

To be honest, aside from the unbearable spiciness, this was easily the best plate of Somtam I've ever had in all my various visits to Thailand. I wish they've taken out the chilli seeds as those were the real killer. If it was less spicy, I might have enjoyed it more.

THAI STIR-FRIED VERMICELLI
WITH PORK FLOSS & CRISPY PORK RIND ( 110 BAHT )

This was very interesting, its like our cu mifen but stir-fried and covered in fluffy pork floss.
This was less spicy than the salad but you definitely need multiple breaks while eating this. I like that its moist and flavourful and had lots of ingredients!

FRIED CHICKEN ( 115 BAHT )

This is definitely the highlight of the meal. Garlicky wings deep fried to a golden brown, crispy on the outside but utterly moist and juicy on the inside. The handful of crispy fried chopped garlic added an extra texture and flavour to the wings. They were hands down, one of the best wings I've ever had.

In a Nutshell

Verdict: 4/5
Price Point: $$
Thumbs Up: Very good quality food.
To Improve: Make sure the one chilli symbol on the menu is really just one chilli please. It's so spicy I can't even finish it!
Will I return: Yes yes yes!
Why: The chicken wings are PHENOMENAL. Best I've ever had.

Billion Beef: Marbled Beef, Anyone?

Billion Beef can be found in the food basement of the tourist favourite Siam Paragon.

Seeing as how beef noodles are a staple in the Thai's diet, this dish is also commonly found in malls and on the streets. Billion Beef prides themselves on serving beef in different styles and with different dishes.

FRIED RICE SIRLION (190BAHT)

The fried rice cmes topped with a generous serving of grilled beef on top of fragrant jasmine rice grains evenly coated in egg. The accompanying sauce is zesty and sweet, which makes for an appetizing meal with paired with the rice.

STEAMED STYLE BEEF NOODLE SOUP (190BAHT)

The beef noodle comes with a light clear broth instead of the more herbal one but its also extremely satisfying. The beef cubes were plenty and the beef was so juicy and sweet. My only gripe was too much fat on the beef which I had to trim away by myself.

STIR-FRIED PAD THAI WITH PRAWNS (180BAHT)

The Pad Thai was the least remarkable dish I've tried in store. It was far too oily, which dampened my mood a little.

In a Nutshell

Verdict: 3/5
Price Point: $
Thumbs Up: Interesting cow chairs, good soup base
To Improve: Local delights like Pad Thai aren't fantastic, but then again their forte is beef so...next time don't be geh kiang try something else.
Will I return: Yes
Why: The beef soup is really quite good.

Petit Audrey: A Tiny Slice of France in the Heart of Bangkok

And no I don't mean this cake.
Well... not just this cake.

Look at the cafe decor!

Doesn't it make you feel like you've stepped into a nice little French cafe in the  Paris countryside?

Petit Audrey serves up very delicious Thai food and interesting Thai-French desserts that really hits the spot. This is by far my favourite place to dine and chill in Bangkok.

THAI ICED TEA (80 BAHT)

Despite having been to Thailand numerous times, I still can't get over the fact that I've never tried Thai iced tea before. This is my first time and I am most definitely blown away. The tea is extremely fragrant and it has that wow factor which keeps you going back for more. This is without milk. I wonder what the milk version will taste like. It's deceptively simple but the flavour is actually very complex.

ICED PEACH TEA CIDER (20 BAHT)

This one didn't wow, save your 20 baht and let it contribute to another glass of Thai iced tea to quench your thirst instead.

TOM YUM KUNG (150 BAHT)

This is by far my favourite bowl of tom yum soup yet. It's spicy without being overwhelming, pleasantly sour without being too cutting. Overall, it just has that right balance of complex spicy and sour flavours. Definitely a bowl of tom yum soup with kick!

FRIED SOFT SHELL CRAB (230 BAHT)

This is actually very yummy, the soft shell crab was deep fried to a crisp, so the outer layer was crispy but the inside was still nice and soft. The accompanying peppers added a nice touch to the dish, it was crunchy and sweet. Salivating now as I'm typing!

FRIED VERMICELLI IN BLACK PEPPER SAUCE ( 180 BAHT )

This reminds me of our zi char dish but more well executed. There were a lot of ingredients and the black pepper sauce was fragrant.

THAI TEA CREPE CAKE (110 BAHT)

This is the highlight of the visit. Everyone knows Thai Iced Tea is made of legendary stuff, and now they've incorporated this legend into crepe cakes! I love how easily my fork cuts into the cake, the texture was so smooth! It was hands down, one of the most memorable cakes I've ever tried. Love how the iced tea flavour wasn't too strong, it was subtle enough to be delightful. We finished the cake in a blink of an eye.

MILO VOLCANO CREPE CAKE ( 125 BAHT)

Last but not least the Milo Volcano!
This was phenomenal. I didn't know milo could be reinvented into something so amazing. Love the different textures and the milky flavour of the milo sauce. I'm in sweets heaven.

Despite being on a short holiday, we actually came back here TWICE!
That's how good the food was.

The total bill for both visits came up to about 1000 baht for 2 persons, which is actually extremely affordable considering we had drinks, mains, side dishes and desserts. It's such a complete meal!

In a Nutshell

Verdict: 4/5
Price Point: $$
Thumbs Up:
To Improve:
Will I return: Yes yes yes!
Why: The food is really quite fantastic, and they have the boxes ticked. Food, atmosphere, service, price - all checked.

Insta-April

April features blur penguins standing around on the beach.

Plenty of surprises in April - rawring pretty socks for my sleep time, gorgeous postcards, intoxicating scents and a funky new watch.

Sometimes a little bacon goes in a long way in preserving your sanity.

Having some Kettle chips that your boyfriend got you doesn't hurt as well.
Honey Dijon and Backyard BBQ are still my favourite flavours but I'll take whatever I can get, chips are chips. They combat work blues and that's the most important thing.

To top it all off, there is the most awesome matcha pudding from Kyoto to brighten even the worst Monday blues!
