Hong Kong: Under Bridge Spicy Crab

If there is one extremely iconic dish that most people relate Hong Kong with, and I'm not talking about the ubiquitous dim sum, that would be the famous Typhoon Shelter Crab 避风塘炒蟹.

There is only one place in Hong Kong island to have this, and that is at Under Bridge Spicy Crab. Well they used to operate under some bridge, hence the name.

Olives Stir-fried French Beans

We ordered a Olives Stir-fried French Beans for some dietary fibre. This was salty and crunchy and oily, all the unhealthy benchmarks of a satisfyingly good Chinese zichar restaurant.

We ate them all up with a bowl of fragrant white rice.

Typhoon Shelter Mantis Shrimp (Market Price)

Of course the highlight must be the Typhoon Shelter Crab. But we've decided that it's a bit much for 2 girls so we compromised with a huge...

Mantis shrimp.

As you can see, it's as long as the chopstick and the shell is so hard you require scissors to cut the shells apart. This is no ordinary prawn! It also comes at an not so ordinary price tag, I know it says market price, but I paid about 330 HKD for this. That's about 55 SGD, can eat one medium size crab in our zi char stalls here already. Luckily still rather tasty if not I might really feel cheated.

This is Typhoon Shelter Mantis Shrimp and it's stir-fried in the same fragrant garlicky concoction.

The mantis shrimp is huge and the meat is firm and juicy, it's a cross between crayfish meat and prawn meat.

The deep-fried garlic crumbs were spicy, salty, crunchy and highly addictive. Pair them with rice and you'll soon realize you've eaten the entire bowl unknowingly. If you enjoy Cereal Prawns with that deep fried crunchy cereal, you'll most definitely love this dish.

Price Point: $$$

Thumbs Up: Delicious Chinese food
To Improve: Food is a tad oily and the prices are..astronomical.

Will I return: Maybe.

Why: The food is hearty, and we met a nice waitress we offered to take pictures for us. Finally, good service! BUT it's really too overpriced, so...we'll see... If you haven't tried it before, do give it a try. One of those been there done that 到此一游 things to do on a trip.

Hong Kong: Mak's Noodles

Mal's Noodles came highly reccomended so it was with relief that we found it fairly easily after descending the freezing cold Peak.

Located at the ground level of The Peak Galleria, you can spot the huge sign from across the building.

We hurried into the shop and was glad for a short reprieve from the cold.

WONTON & BRAISED BEEF NOODLE SOUP (53HKD)

The noodles are so springy I will willingly sacrifice and have a cheat meal just to slurp these up. The soup came piping hot, thank goodness, so it helped warm us up.

WONTON RICE NOODLE SOUP (38HKD)

I had the Wonton Noodle instead and it was very satisfying. The wontons were big, fat and juicy. The epitome of goodness. The soup was extremely light, which was a nice change from the heavily flavoured HK cuisine. I know the small bowls are to keep the food warm but for a clumsy person like me, I find it a bit hard to eat without spilling something haha.

KAILAN IN OYSTER SAUCE (30HKD)

Daily fibre intake haha! This was good.
I really like HK Kailan, crunchy and sweet and fresh. It tasted good on it's own even without the oyster sauce.

Verdict: 4/5

Price Point: $$$
Thumbs Up: No service charge! Beef noodle soup was pretty good.
To Improve: Bit pricey, paid abt $6 SGD for my noodle soup but its so little.

Will I return: Yes.
Why: The food is very comforting after freezing my ass off up at The Peak.

Insta-Feb

Feb is sad.

Okay not sad, but it's short, and mostly it's a mad rush so I barely had fun.

Chicken Up was a novelty, soy wings were good but at $18 for 4 wings, I doubt I'll ever return again.

Too expensive!

Attempted to paint my nails after a very long hiatus and this is what happened. Disaster.

CNY is all about the feasting and gatherings, so this fotrune cookie can go into my stomach where it belongs and the fortune in the dustbin where it belongs too.

Andddd... that's it.

Goodness. No more. It's okay, March is coming!
