Starring Anne Hathaway as Emma and Jim Sturgess as Dexter, One Day is movie adapted from the novel by David Nicholls. The story started with Emma and Dexter on their graduation day. They spent the night together but they were not involved romantically. From that moment onwards, they became the best of friends. The day they met was on July 15th, and the film covers their lives on this date for the next twenty years. Sometimes they're spending the date together on this date, and sometimes they're not. Throughout the years, they were there for each other, sometimes they argued, sometimes each of their changes became too irksome to handle; but they remained the best of friends. Both of them move to London, and Emma's dreams of being a writer is still unfufilled. She becomes a waitress while Dexter becomes a successful television presenter. While there are various attempts to start a relationship with each other, some things always happen to prevent that happening. Maybe they are perfect for each other, but the timing just wasn't right yet. Dexter takes Emma on a vacation, where they did wild and fun things together. Their bond of friendship grew stronger than ever after this trip. Meanwhile, they went back to their respective lives and many things happened in between. Dexter had one too many flings, while Emma is stuck in a rut with Ian whom she doesn't love. Years later, they met up again. Only this time, Dexter developed a drinking and drugs problem and his career went down the drain. Emma, on the other hand, has found a way out of her waitressing gig and became a teacher. However, Dexter who is too high on drugs and alcohol insulted Emma's career, which in turn led to a full blown argument between the two of them. There is one quote that I particularly love that Emma said here.. “Dexter, I love you so much. So, so much, and I probably always will. I just don't like you anymore. I'm sorry.” Years later, Dexter cleaned up his act and is getting married to Sylvie. Emma broke up with Ian because she finally realized she didn't love him, no matter how hard she tried. Emma moves to Paris to start writing again and has found a man she loves. It was at this point when Dexter reappeared, a divorced man with a messed up career. In Paris, they talked about their relationship together and FINALLY, Emma and Dexter ends up together. Emma and Dexter gets married, and they were the happiest they could ever be. But one day, Emma gets into a car accident and she never survived. Dexter spent days crying in bed, and nights picking fights in bars. It was a pretty heartbreaking moment. Dexter eventually picked up his life again, and opened a deli-cafe. The movie ends with Dexter and his daughter with Sylvie climbling a hill, the same hill that he and Emma used to climb after their first meeting together. That, and their first kiss together along with a promise to keep in touch. Why so heartbreaking!! Honestly I never expected Emma to just..die all of a sudden. They finally found each other and their happy times ended when that huge truck went bang. I love this movie, and I'm going to read the book as soon as I can get my hands on it. I love how the characters change and develop, and how their friendship shifts and evolves over the years. It's endearing, heart wrenching, and a fantastic story. It is sometimes comedic, and sometimes the dialogue between Emma and Dexter hints of longing and regret, of disappointment and yearning. I think the characters were well-developed, very in-depth and persuasive. The whole year by year story telling is also very interesting as it shows this contrast of the characters' changes. Overall, I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. A must watch, definitely.
